Flyy Girl

Flyy Girl Black Book of the Day

What up book people? Time for another Black book rec. Y’all…I get asked all the time what book made me fall in love with reading. I’ve been reading since I was two so I’ve loved it my whole life. That means I can’t really point to one book that changed it for me. But I know a lot of people that reference today’s book as the one that made them love reading. It’s Flyy Girl by Omar Tyree.

Y’all I read this when it first came out in the early 90s and was today years old when I learned that it is considered Young Adult Fiction and recognized as the introduction of street lit. Who knew?

The book is a coming of age story about Tracy who lives in middle class Philly. The story follows her from elementary to high school. She’s beautiful and intelligent but somewhat spoiled by her parents and hella boy crazy. The book is set in the 80s so it has hip hop music as a backdrop of the story complete with house parties and errthang.

Y’all this book was insanely popular. I think it is because it was an anomaly when it came out and incredibly relatable. It is still discussed today in FB reading groups. Personally I loved the entire trilogy although the other two books don’t get mentioned as much. Lemme know in the comments if you have read this series.

You’re welcome.
